Do I like cigarettes?

There are so many things you can measure with a pack of cigarettes.
It used to be cooking time for me, when I was a smoker and a social cook. That's when "Bake for three cigarettes" are valid directions.
Then I remember seeing Dancer in the Dark in high school with my best friend. After the movie, the two of us girls sat in a coffee shop. Speechless. Drinking cappuccinos and smoking – it took us two cigarettes each to shake off the silence. Now that’s a good movie.
Of course, there is the waiting. Chain smoking strong cigarettes, waiting for the inevitable disaster to come out from under your bed, maybe hoping to suffocate it with the smoke, clueless of time if it weren’t for the cigarette butts in front of you. Been there.
The first date, the breakup, a sunrise before heading to class – do I really need to keep going? Though often only a foul-breath creature, a full ashtray sometimes tells stories more twisted than those in 1001 Nights.
Now as a nonsmoker I need other addictions to keep my feet on solid ground.
